Gold Star Wife, Advisor, and Advocate

Jane Horton is currently employed as a Presidential Appointee at the Pentagon as a Senior Advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Personnel and Readiness. She is also a veteran, service member, and Gold Star family advocate, as well as a writer and commentator. In her last role, Jane was employed by the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington D.C., as the Congressional and Military Liaison.

She is the proud Gold Star wife of SPC Christopher Horton, an Army sniper killed in action on September 9, 2011 in Paktia, Afghanistan.

She has served as Policy Consultant to the Travis Manion Foundation, the Advisory Board to the Independence Fund, Remember My Service, and Medals of Honor, and worked with and for numerous other organizations serving veterans and military families.  Horton was appointed by General Odierno in 2012 to serve and assist on the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Survivor Advisory Working Group and continues to serve to this day.  She has an extensive political, security and legislative relations background and has volunteered over 9,000 hours serving, advocating for, and advising on the survivor population of the United States military.  She has a bachelors degree in Public Administration from Roger’s State University and a certificate in International Studies from Harvest Brisbane in Brisbane, Australia.  In 2011 Jane served as an intern in Senator Inhofe’s War Room and has worked extensively with Congress on legislation pertaining to Gold Star Families.  She was the visionary behind the passage of SA 2031, the creation and implementation of Gold Star Family Advocates in the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law Dec. 26 2013.  She was also instrumental in the inclusion and passage of the Fry Scholarship to be extended to surviving spouses in 2014.

Horton has traveled to Afghanistan on three occasions- her first was with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford, where she traveled to Afghanistan and Israel as a Special Assistant and ombudsman to the troops. She was awarded the Commander’s Award for Public Service by Army Chief of Staff General Odierno for her service on the Army’s Survivor Advisory Board.  Jane is a contributor for the military publication Task and Purpose and has been featured on ABC, The Drudge Report, Huffington Post, USA Today, The Blaze, Fox and Friends, CNN, The Dennis Miller Show, Huckabee, Hannity, The Washington Examiner, Special Report with Bret Baier, Kelly File, and on Fox and Friends, along with numerous other paper publications and talk shows.  Jane was honored at the 2015 Miss America pageant as an official Honorary Miss America.
