Op-Ed: Honoring Our Fallen With the Global War on Terror Memorial Act

29 JUNE 2017

By Capt. Jon Batt, U.S. Army

“My first experience with losing a brother-in-arms came in October of 2007, just months before I graduated from West Point. The Academy has a tradition of announcing the deaths of its alumni in the Cadet Mess Hall during mandatory lunch meals so that the Corps of Cadets can honor their fallen predecessors with a moment of silence. When First Lieutenant Tom Martin’s name was announced, my heart sank- it sank like it would so many times in the following decade when I heard of friends killed or severely wounded fighting terrorism around the world. Tom was one of my best friends, I looked up to him, and he always seemed so confident; it never crossed my mind that he could die.”
